301 Redirect
A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect from one URL to another. Basically, this is a server response to a website request informing that the website address has been permanently changed. As a result, a website visitor or a crawler is redirected to a new URL which is different from the one they originally entered to their browser or selected from the search results.
Why use a 301 redirect?
This redirect type allows to transfer the link juice (ranking power) from one page to another. It's commonly used in the following situations:
- if the page URL was changed
- if page duplicates were were merged together
- if a website moved from one domain name to another
- if a redirect from a www website to a non-www version is required
